Sub-Dean & Canon Missioner

Elizabeth came to Derby in 2014 from a team parish in Witney and an earlier curacy in Somerset; originally from Edinburgh, she is gradually working her way north. Before she was ordained she taught English in schools in Edinburgh and Wells. She has walked to Santiago de Compostela twice and is always wondering where to walk next. Her role as Canon Missioner is to explore, begin conversations and create links. In 2017 she was appointed Sub-Dean. From October 2019 until the installation of a new Dean of Derby, Elizabeth will be Acting Dean.

Canon Precentor

Richard became Canon for Liturgy at Derby Cathedral in September 2018 and has the responsibility for worship and music including preparing the many special services which take place at the Cathedral in the course of a year.

Born in Bedford, Richard was a teacher before ordination and trained for the ministry at Ripon College Cuddesdon and the Church Divinity School of the Pacific in California. After a curacy in Worcester Diocese, he moved to Derby for the first time to become Chaplain of what is now Derby University, before becoming vicar of Chellaston and then vicar of Spondon, when he was also chair of the Diocesan Board of Education. Immediately before coming to the Cathedral he spent thirteen years away from the Diocese as Team Rector of Dunstable in Bedfordshire.

Richard is married to Alison and they have two grown-up sons. As a family, they are keen Derby County FC supporters and love the Northumberland coast where they own a holiday property.

Lay member of Chapter

Mark is a lay member of the Chapter and Chair of the Chapter’s finance committee, as well as being a former Warden of the Cathedral. He is also treasurer of Edensor Parish in the Peak District, where he lives. He is, in addition, Executive Chair of the Diocesan Board of Finance.


Lay member of Chapter

David joined the chapter in March 2010. He was High Sheriff of Derbyshire in 2006-7 and has since taken a keen interest in the Cathedral. He is a Chartered Surveyor in general practice and combines this with farming and landowning interests at Cubley where he and his family have lived for 30 years.

David is married to Jane,a non-stipendiary priest in the South Dales & Longford 8 benefices. They have four children and three grandchildren. If ever marooned on a desert island, David would insist on a guitar as his luxury.

Lay member of Chapter

Val has worshipped at Derby Cathedral since 1987 and became a lay member of the Chapter in April 2014. Val is the mother of two sons who were both head choristers in the Cathedral Choir and she also sings with the Cathedral Voluntary Choir.

Before retirement, Val worked with children with special educational needs in both mainstream and special schools and was a school governor. When not at the Cathedral, she loves spending time with her grandchildren, enjoys bird-watching and visiting National Trust properties.

Diocesan Secretary and Chapter Steward

Rachel was delighted to join the Cathedral in January 2015 as Chapter Steward.  In 2017, Rachel additionally took on the role of Diocesan Secretary and Chair of the Diocesan Board of Finance whilst remaining the strategic lead at the Cathedral in a role innovative across the Church of England.  Rachel grew up in Derby then moved around the UK managing different businesses. She has worked across corporate, charity and third- sector businesses before joining the Church of England.  Rachel is also Chair of Trustees at DHA (Direct Help and Advice), The Derby Law Centre.

University Chaplains

Adam joined Derby Cathedral in the Spring of 2014. The main focus of his work is as Anglican Chaplain at the University. Prior to arriving, Adam was in Dorset where he had been living as part of two different Christian communities, latterly at Hilfield Friary with the Anglican Franciscans, and prior to that at The Pilsdon Community, living alongside those struggling with poor mental health, addiction, and homelessness. He has also worked in parishes in inner-city Portsmouth and Worcestershire. Adam is married to Teresa and enjoys many things in life including the countryside, sport, and the arts (both high and low culture!)

Assistant Director of Music

Edward joined the staff at Derby Cathedral in September 2017, having previously held posts at Worcester College Oxford, Tewkesbury Abbey, Dean Close School Cheltenham and Southwell Minster. His role at the Cathedral involves assisting Hugh in the administration of the Music Department, playing the organ for most choral services, teaching the choristers and directing the Voluntary Choir. Edward also directs the University Choir, and accompanies Bingham and district Choral Society. Having been a chorister himself, he has a particular passion for the music of the Anglican liturgy. When he isn’t practising or answering emails, he can often be found drinking, eating, walking, or any combination of the above.

Canons' Verger

Mat has worked at the Cathedral since March 2005. Mat looks after the building, keeping it clean and tidy as well as setting up and taking part in the daily round of services. Mat's role also involves assisting the Clergy on a day-to-day basis. 

Mat originally trained as a chef and worked in the Hospitality industry until starting at the Cathedral. 

Mat was baptised and confirmed after joining the Cathedral which he says was "a great experience" making him feel "much more a part of the Christian faith & community." 

Mat's interests outside of work include walking, playing snooker and going to the Cinema and when time allows, Mat is a keen golf player. 



Dave has been a member of the Cathedral congregation for 12 years, firstly in the pews and then as a server.  From 2011 until the present day Dave has worked as a part-time Verger.

Dave enjoys spending time on his allotment, loves travelling and is a keen Derby County supporter.

Café Assistant

Head of Operations

Carol joined the Cathedral as Head of Operations in March to support the Chapter Steward in the day to day running of the Cathedral.  Carol has worked for a number of companies in a project and operational role. She has lived in Derby for 30 years and is a keen Derby County fan.

Kim has worked at the Cathedral office for many years. Kim is also an active member of the congregation and volunteers as a steward and Acolyte at the Cathedral services. In her spare time, Kim enjoys shopping and spending time with her friends and family, particularly going to the theatre and eating out

Diary and Events Coordinator

Laura joined the Cathedral in June 2015 in the role of Diary and Events Coordinator. Laura’s background is in event management and she previously ran events for a number of organisations including the University of Derby.

A Fashion studies Graduate from the University of Derby, Laura still enjoys making and creating in her spare time and can often be found with a project or two on the go. Laura is from Derby originally and after spending time living in London and New York returned home a few years ago. When not working Laura likes to make the most of the local music and art scene within the city.

Schools Education Officer
Viv joined the Cathedral staff in 2010 having worshipped at the Cathedral for more than 20 years. Born in Nottingham she is an experienced primary school teacher having worked in Derby City and County for many years as a music specialist, which she combines with her role at the Cathedral. When not teaching she enjoys singing in the Cathedral’s Voluntary Choir and Derby Choristers. She loves world travel, gardening, good food and the company of family and friends. She is secretly quite fond of fast cars and Star Trek.


Keeper of the Treasures 
Derek has been a server at both the Cathedral and Bridge Chapel for over 30 years. Following his early retirement from staff of Lloyds Bank in 2003 he became a member of the Cathedral’s team of visitor guides. With the opening of the Cathedral Treasury in 2003 by HM the Queen, he has been responsible for the maintenance of the Treasury. Derek liaises with parishes in the Derby Diocese who wish to loan their silver etc for exhibition and is always available to parishes to talk about their silver and textiles conservation. A Vice President of Derby Civic Society and former Chairman of The Friends of Derby Museum and Art Gallery, Derek is always keen to promote Derby’s great industrial and cultural heritage.

Head Server 

John's primary role is to organise and train the servers who assist the clergy in the Cathedral's main services. John has been involved with the Cathedral for over 50 years.A Chartered Mechanical Engineer, John worked for engineering companies in Derby until retirement and served as a Magistrate for over 20 years. He has been involved in Scouting since he was a boy and continues to assist when required. John was awarded an MBE for services to the Scouting movement in 2016. 

Cathedral Warden

Dave has returned to the role of Cathedral Warden along with his roles on Ministry of Welcome and the Social Committee, he is also involved in helping the vergers department especially on the maintenance and repair tasks.

His career prior to retirement was mainly in the aerospace industry and was a director of a local engineering company. He is still an active member of the Scouting movement and being a keen walker, is involved in the organisation of competitive walking competitions for Derbyshire Scouts. He is also involved in local amateur dramatics – backstage.

Cathedral Warden and Safeguarding Link for Children 

Gwyneth has been a regular worshipper at the Cathedral since 1975 when she joined the choir as a 9 year old. Over the years she has enjoyed volunteering in various roles around the Cathedral. Currently she is a warden, child safeguarding link, and she also washes and irons some of the white linen. Also Gwyneth is a soprano of the Voluntary Choir and Derby Choristers. She is a primary school catering supervisor. Married in 1990 at the Cathedral to Robert an engineer at Rolls Royce and they now have two grown up children.

Director of Music

Alexander joined Derby Cathedral as Director of Music in April 2019, where he is responsible for the operation of the Cathedral’s Music Department and directing the Cathedral Choir. Before moving to Derby Alexander spent three years as Assistant Director of Music at St Edmundsbury Cathedral in Suffolk.

Alexander is a prize winning graduate of the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied the organ with David Titterington and Susan Landale and conducting with Patrick Russill and Paul Brough. Alongside his studies at the Academy Alexander held the organ scholarships at Southwark Cathedral, the Royal Hospital Chelsea and St Marylebone Parish Church. Prior to studies in London Alexander held the organ scholarship at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle. As an organist Alexander has performed at Westminster Abbey, St Paul’s Cathedral, the Royal Festival Hall, Snape Maltings and abroad in France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Poland and the Netherlands. He has played with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the European Union Youth Orchestra and the Monteverdi String Band and performed under the batons of Marin Alsop, Gianandrea Noseda and Trevor Pinnock.

Alexander is married to Dora, a professional violinist, and they have a one year old son, Peter. Dora and Alexander co-founded the Apollon Duo, a violin and organ duo which explores the repertoire for this seldom heard combination of instruments.

Bio for Head Server

Tim has worshipped at the Cathedral for ten years and now leads the team of lay volunteers who assist the clergy in both regular and special services. He is also involved in several other areas of Cathedral life and is currently custodian of the Bridge Chapel. Away from the Cathedral he, and his wife Carol, manage their massive garden and enjoy walking, cycling, holidays and the odd pint of real ale.

Bio for Keeper of the Treasures

Alison was born in Derby and lived in the city until moving away to Bedfordshire in 2005 when her husband (Canon Richard) was appointed as Team Rector of Dunstable.  Alison worked in Derby for many years as a mental health occupational therapist, a role she continued with when living in Dunstable.  She is a keen gardener and flower arranger, as well as enjoying other creative interests such as sewing.  Since becoming a member of the cathedral congregation Alison has joined the Serving team and the Social Committee.  She is pleased to return to her home city where she still has family members.

Michael joined Derby Cathedral as Head Verger in May 2019.

Michael originally comes from Jarrow in the North East and has many years experience as a Verger, having held the post of Verger at St Paul’s church Knightsbridge, St Leonard’s church Wollaton, and Salisbury Cathedral, he has also worked as Head Verger at Manchester Cathedral and most recently as Head Verger at Nottingham City Parish.
Michael is married to Karen and they have adult, identical twin daughters

Alan returned to Derby Cathedral in 2015, having previously been Lay Reader there in the 1990’s. In the intervening years he was an Associate Priest in the Melbourne Benefice of South Derbyshire. As Chaplain he supports the governance work of the Cathedral Chapter by advising and minuting its meetings.

Alan has a long-standing interest and involvement in education, having been a secondary school headteacher, a university honorary research fellow and an internationally recognised writer on education leadership and how school leaders may be sustained in its ethical, moral and spiritual dimensions. He is also a Churchill Fellow. Married to Jean, with two adult sons, they enjoy hill walking together.

The Very Revd Dr Peter Robinson became Dean of Derby in July 2020.

Peter was ordained in Newcastle Diocese in 1995 and served his title in the Team Parish of North Shields. In 1999 Peter and his family moved to live in Byker in the East End of Newcastle, where Peter led the Urban Ministry and Theology Project in Newcastle East Deanery whilst being priest in charge of St Martin’s, Byker and also from 2001 priest in charge of St Michael’s, Byker. From 2007 Peter was an honorary canon of Newcastle Cathedral.

From 2008 until mid-2020 Peter served as Archdeacon of Lindisfarne. In this ministry Peter was sometime Warden of Readers, he chaired the Lindisfarne Regional Training Partnership and the Newcastle Diocesan Education Board and he led the regional Inspired North East project.

Peter is committed to partnership working and throughout his ministry has had leadership and trustee roles in the voluntary and community sector.
